The Okaloosa Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday unanimously approved a proclamation designating May 2026 as Cox Inspirational Student Hero Month, recognizing local students who have shown resilience in the face of adversity.

  • Commissioner Carolyn Ketchel read the proclamation during the May 5 meeting, noting the program is in its 33rd year in Okaloosa County.

The Cox Inspirational Heroes program has recognized more than 5,200 students from Lafayette, Louisiana, to Gainesville, Florida, since its inception in 1993. Honorees are chosen by a committee of leaders at their school based on their resilience after experiencing the loss of a family member, a medical issue, a difficult family situation or other hardship.

This year, 37 Okaloosa County students will be recognized at an awards ceremony Wednesday, May 13, at Northwest Florida State College in Niceville. Check-in and a reception begin at 3 p.m., with the awards ceremony at 4 p.m. in Building 400, Raider Central/Raider Café, at 100 East College Parkway.

Cam Johnson with Cox Communications accepted the proclamation at the meeting and noted full participation from the school district this year.

“I appreciate y’all helping us recognize these great students,” Johnson said. “We have 37 students, 100% participation from the school district this year. It’s a great opportunity to celebrate these kids and everything that they’ve gone through in their life.”
