Eglin Air Force Base announces prescribed burn planned near Florosa on April 5

Forest management officials at Eglin Air Force Base will conduct a controlled burn covering 700 acres, with smoke expected to rise 1,800 feet and drift northwest toward East Milton.
A path of flames spreads during a prescribed burn Jan. 25 at White Point Recreation Area on the Eglin reservation in Florida. Prescribed fires maintain the base's ecosystem in its pristine state, reduce dangerous buildup of understory and enable maximum flexibility to conduct test and training missions without causing catastrophic wildfires. The Fire Management division here applies prescribed fire to an average of 90,000 acres annually. Eglin Air Force Base’s Wildland Fire Branch has scheduled a prescribed burn for April 5 on the Eglin Range, officials announced Friday.

  • The 700-acre burn will target an area approximately a quarter mile north of U.S. Highway 98 and east of Range Road A-21, near residential property in the Florosa area. The operation will focus on the western portion of the range.

According to fire officials, smoke from the controlled burn is expected to rise approximately 1,800 feet and move northwest over the Eglin Range toward the East Milton area.

Wildland Fire crews and equipment will remain on scene throughout the operation to monitor the fire line and ensure public safety, base officials said.
